Winter Activities

Winter at Big Powderhorn offers an unlimited variety of outdoor entertainment. In addition to alpine skiing at Big Powderhorn Ski Mountain you can choose from four other nearby ski areas, or several groomed Nordic cross-country ski trails. Some of the best snowmobile trails in the country make snowmobiling a popular activity as well. Opportunities for snowshoeing, ice skating, and sleigh rides are just outside your door.

Typically, the Lake Superior shoreline receives over 200" of annual snowfall. But as a compliment to the natural snow, Big Powderhorn Ski Mountain snowmaking system covers 90% of the mountain to ensure quality skiing throughout the season. Each night the grooming crew works diligently so you'll awake to another day of beautifully groomed slopes.

Superior Skiing / Snow boarding

Big Powderhorn Mountain has 33 regularly groomed trails and two terrain parks. Nine double chair lifts and a beginner handle tow rope allow skiers/snow boarders to enjoy the 253 beautiful acres. Rental is available at the main lodge. Lifts open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

We are also a short drive to Indianhead Mountain Ski Resort, Blackjack Ski Resort and the Porkies. We have the largest selection of luxury ski cabins in the area. Our guests often make their home base at Big Powderhorn Ski Resort and sample the other nearby ski hills.

Cross Country Skiing

The region is gaining a reputation as one of the finest cross country skiing areas in North America. The groomed, tracked X-country ski trail systems offer the Nordic skier everything from rental equipment and technique instructions to the night life long associated with the sport of skiing. Back country skiing is also growing in popularity.

Snowmobiling

A snowmobiler's mecca with more than 2,000 miles of groomed trails including unplowed logging roads, railroad grade, and secluded trails through the National Forest, you can tour through thick cedar groves or ride past breath taking caverns along Lake Superior with unique rock formations and frozen waterfalls. Take a ride through the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, over Lake Gogebic, or through the open prairie land to experience one of the premier snowmobile riding locations in North America. Snowmobile season generally starts December 1st and runs through the end of March. There are special events like the Red Light Rally, day-trip rides, and plenty of local lakes for open riding. Enjoy a hearty meal or hot beverage on one of your stops at one of the many trailside gathering places.

Snowshoeing

The opportunities for snowshoeing are virtually unlimited and snowshoe rentals are available. The Ottawa National Forest maintains many short trails to the numerous waterfalls along the Black River Parkway. The United States Forest Service also has developed a link with the North Country Hiking Trail, which is part of the National Hiking Trail System. The North Country Trail offers true wilderness hiking at its best.

Ice Skating

Ice skate the day or evening away at our lighted skating rink located in the center of our lodging complex.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing for Lake trout, chinook, coho salmon, and steelhead in the waters of Lake Superior will provide a good challenge as you haul them up from great depths. Pike, trout, bass, muskie and numerous pan fish can be caught at any of the many inland lakes. Many lakes are readily accessible, while others lie deeply hidden in the forest, challenging the skill, ingenuity and adventurous spirit of the fisherman. Area outfitters can rent you all the equipment you'll need for an enjoyable outing.
